admin May 23, 2020

Background

How do you you create your community on purpose? What are the principles of belonging that needed to be expressed for a community to thrive. I speak with the author of The Art Of Building Your Community:7 Principles of Belonging Charles H.Vogl, who is also an executive consultant, award winning author and regular guest lecturer at the Yale School of Management and Yale Leadership Institute. He works with leaders in technology, media and government to make them more effective in creating change.

What We Discuss with Charles

The documentary he helped his wife make, a story of his wife’s parents escape from Cambodia to America, without having money, any connections or any network.

  • The challenges of getting stories from strangers.
  • What can we learn from groups that handled diversity in the past apply it to our current situation with Covid?
  • How someone gets accepted into your group.
  • Why it is important to be mature in your group and your group members to know that.
  • The need to create a place for your group or community to meet.
  • What is a mature group or community?
  • How elders impact a group or community
  • The 2 cultures he learned about at Rice University
  • Why men from certain groups find it hard to be vulnerable.
  • And much more

Look at your life and notice what you did not invest in, and how that stuff turned out

My Takeaways

My takeaways from this conversation was

  1. There’s a difference between growing from failure and just being reckless: Count the cost of your actions or inactions, and its impact to yourself and those around you.
  2. Men need to be taught it’s alright to fail: It’s a world of competition and you have to build your skills in order to thrive
  3. Look at your life and notice what you did not invest in, and how that stuff turned out: If things are not working, I should not be surprised. How much time have I put into making it work? How much time have I put into getting the knowledge I need to make it work?
