Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.
— Oscar Wilde.
Be yourself. What does this really mean? As humans we start out copying everyone around us. As children, we copy every word our parents and adults around us say until we master speaking. Then we continue this behaviour into our adulthood. So does this mean, we copy until we master the skill, and then use it however we see fit. Probably so.When I think about the passing of Kobe Bryant, he played the shooting guard position in basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers. He played the position in his own way. Anyone can use the moves available in basketball. The fade-away jumper is an example of one of the most popular offensive weapons a player can master. You practice the move until you add your style, your nuance to the move. Then you own it. Every player has a way they execute their moves, that people start attributing the move to the player. The hook shot made popular by Kareem Abdul Jabber.
What have I learnt from this? Copy until I master it, then use it differently. Change it up. Use it differently. I think that’s the way to start becoming yourself.
